Application Process and Exemplar Criteria

Application for Exemplar status is voluntary, and open to all UK sites undertaking Interventional Radiology. The application process is currently closed and will reopen in 2024.
Process
The person completing the application form should be a BSIR member.
Sites undertake self assessment based on the BSIR assessment proforma which can be accessed here
Questionnaires are reviewed by the BSIR Safety and Quality committee, and notified if they achieve exemplar or pilot site status.
The whole application is reviewed, but as a minimum exemplar centres should demonstrate their department works in accordance with the POIRS document.
- Sepsis and haemorrhage control including nephrostomy (24/7), biliary drainage (24/7), abscess drainage (24/7), embolisation for GI haemorrhage (24/7 local or networked), IVC filter insertion
- Formal IR on call rota, 1 in 6 maximum frequency. Details of multisite or network rota if applicable
- IR mortality and morbidity meeting
- Use of WHO’s Safe Surgery/IR checklist and audit
- Written information for out patients
- Audit of patient consent
- Interventional Radiology Clinic
- An example of service improvement. Consent from Local Lead will be obtained before publishing content on SQ section of BSIR website

Once a site gains exemplar status application for renewal will be invited every 4 years.
Pilot sites may reapply annually, and will be invited to resubmit their application every 2 years.
