Briefer descriptions of various Interventional Radiology procedures can be found in the patient information sheets which are mostly based on those produced by the Royal College of Radiologists. They have been revised by members of the BSIR and are designed to provide concise, clear accurate accounts of the most common interventional radiological procedures.
Introduction by Professor Andy Adam President Royal College Radiologists

Interventional Radiology is the use of imaging guidance to effect treatment. This discipline has grown enormously during the last half century and now plays a major role in the treatment of conditions in most organ systems. It has already revolutionised the management of major trauma and peripheral vascular disease. However, much of the potential of Interventional Radiology remains unfulfilled: many interventional techniques are underused and most patients are unaware of their existence. The main obstacle to the further growth of this discipline is the lack of a defined career structure. The Royal College of Radiologists is working hard to address this issue. Interventional Radiology is likely to be formally recognised as a subspecialty of radiology during 2010. In turn this will lead to the establishment of designated posts, boosting recruitment and enabling us to offer a more complete service to our patients.
The members of the British Society of Interventional Radiology deserve much credit for what they have achieved already, working in very difficult circumstances, with inadequate support and inappropriate funding arrangements. When the changes we are seeking have been put in place, interventional radiologists will be able to make an even greater contribution and will receive the recognition they deserve.
