Interventional Fellowships

Cook Endovascular Fellowship

The literal meaning of a fellowship is the 'sharing of similar interests, ideals or experiences as by reason of profession (religion or friendship)'.

As interventional radiology (IR) becomes increasingly popular (with the advent of PACS and potential loss of diagnostic work to abroad reporting services / independent sector companies) the competition for consultant posts is increasing. Therefore in order to improve your chances of getting the all important consultant interview fellowships are seen as an advantageous method to improve skills, case numbers and publications.

With radiology training time potentially being reduced to meet Government target it may become difficult to perform a fellowship within the training programme. Even now it is increasingly popular to perform a fellowship as a post CCT experience.

The purpose of this section is to provide information regarding which fellowships are available, who to contact and information that may assist with choosing where to go!

Once you have decided to undertake a fellowship then the next question is where. There are multiple fellowships offered in all forms of IR (vascular / non- vascular / paediatric etc) both in this country and abroad. These are constantly changing so do not take the provided information as the only ones offered.

The application process for each fellowship differs, indeed even when to apply is different , e.g. if you wish to go to Toronto then ~2.5 yrs in advance is needed whereas most Canadian fellowships only require 1 year. As will all things it is best to be organised but occasionally people drop out and late places can be obtained. In all cases the best initial approach is via the local organising consultant and I have tried to provide email addresses / websites as possible.

Having completed the FRCR pre-fellowship is advantageous so that your mind can be focussed on gaining experience in interventional raiology. Some jobs may insist that the candidate is post FRCR as an entry requirement - always check the job description.

Further considerations:

  • CCT date.
If the fellowship starts prior to your CCT date then college (RCR) approval will need to be obtained and an 'out of programme' form completed. Acceptance will also need to be obtained from your deanery.(Depending on how long before your CCT that you will start the fellowship may change the college's viewpoint on it).
  • Check how / who (or if) will provide the funding.
  • What will your spouse / partner do? Not so much a problem if the fellowship is in the UK , but if travelling abroad check local rules about their rights to work. e.g. if going to Canada as a doctor and NOT performing a fellowship the local exams will be required (MB.BS) level.
  • Talk with the fellow who is performing the job to find out what is really like and if it is suitable for your desired training needs. Also as with any job application a visit to the centre is always a good idea. For example travelling to the centre offering the fellowship (perhaps as part of a holiday) to meet all the consultants could improve your chance of being offered the fellowship!

Now enough of the chat, here is a list of fellowships (up to date as of April 2007). For the fine details and job descriptions the local lead consultant will need to be contacted.

If anyone is aware of changes to the details given for a particular fellowship or knows of fellowships that are available but not listed below then please contact us so that we can update the information
