Consultant Post

Applying for a consultant post which can shape the rest of your working life is a terrifying prospect for most trainees.  This anxiety is compounded by the fear of the application process.  The following article describes in detail what you should expect and how to increase your chances of a successful application and how to survive the first few years as a consultant.  Peter Torrie and Elspeth Elson, Consultant Radiologists at the Royal Berkshire Hospital,  have developed advice on the many and varied issues that face Specialist Registrars applying for consultant posts and new Consultants in the first five years of their appointment.  The views are clearly those of the authors and it should be noted that the article was written in 2001.  However, the observations are always perceptive, occasionally cynical and frequently amusing.
